The 4th LP from Sen Morimoto.

Chicago alt-jazz polymath Sen Morimoto returns for their fourth LP Time Is On Your Side, out October 23rd on their own label, Sooper Records. Sen’s influences timehop from ‘70s pop, folk and jazz, to ‘90s hip-hop, to modern indie and everything in between. Vintage drum machines back up rootsy guitars and lush strings, emphasizing Sen’s nostalgic and heartfelt lyricism, like echoes of a childhood memory, distorted by time.

Sen is a Japanese-American multi-disciplinary artist, and prolific producer in the Chicago and Tokyo alt-pop, jazz and rap landscapes. From the jazz-rap of their debut Cannonball!, to the electro-pop of their self-titled sophomore album, to the political prog-jazz fusion of their third LP Diagnosis, Sen’s post-genre output remains reliably unpredictable.

With another left turn, Time Is On Your Side dials in a slow-burning groove that brings Morimoto’s timeless and personal songwriting to center stage. Lyrically, Time is an antidote to the ever-accelerating pace of the doom-scroll era. “I’m not fighting time anymore,” Sen says, “I treat it as an ingredient. Some of these songs only needed a pinch - a couple of improvised takes. Others sat for years, like wine in a barrel, until they became equal parts of my past and future. My hope is that it could inspire the freedom to slow down.”

The visual accompaniments to Time Is On Your Side were made entirely by Sen, from the album cover art to the self-directed music videos. The album features a crew of Chicago musicians, all members of Sen’s live band, Kaina Castillo, Ryan Person, Elijah Bradford and Brok Mende. The resulting universe of Time Is On Your Side, is viscerally intimate, each facet of its presentation hand-made by Morimoto and their tight-knit Chicago community.

Sen Morimoto is a Japanese-American multi-disciplinary artist based in Chicago.

Their three studio albums, Cannonball! (2018), Sen Morimoto (2020) and Diagnosis (2023), released on Sen's label Sooper Records, all live in their own world. Sen plays any instrument they can find to craft home recordings that bend time signatures and disparate influences into a singular fusion of art-pop and jazz.

Their upcoming fourth LP Time Is On Your Side, is set to release on October 23rd, with its first single “Overthinker” available now.

Sen is also a writer, director, film scorer and animator. Their most recent project is a hand-drawn animation / live action series of shorts titled Umi.

Since 2019, Sen has co-owned and operated Chicago label Sooper Records. Founded in opposition to the music industry’s blindspot for Chicago's DIY underground, Sooper has become a trusted source for eclectic music and practices that center each artist’s unique journey before industry standards.
